Kilometres away from Zante city a
tiny village right on the southwest
part of the island set in a sweeping
bay with turquoise waters.
Actually, Keri village is separated
in two parts; the lovely compact village
situated up to the green hill and
the other one that is called "Lake
of Keri" that there is the gulf of
Keri, the beach and the small port.
Despite the tourist growth of the
area, especially in the "Lake", the
people of Keri are mainly occupied
with agriculture. They cultivate olives
and vineyards. They also produce an
exceptional quality of olive oil &
wine.
The main characteristic of the first
part is the old stone made houses
and the narrow streets. The old houses
that survived the destructive earthquake
in 1953 are nowadays-outstanding showpieces
of the local architecture.
1 mile beyond the village, at the
very edge of a steep cliff and 300
meters above the sea level, stands
the lighthouse of Keri. For more than
a century the Lighthouse guides and
guards the boats & ships. The view
from there is breathtaking.
The mountainous landscape, the sharp
cliffs, and the sheer shores of the
Ionian, create an astonishing feeling
to the visitor.
From this spot, you can admire one
of the most beautiful sunsets in Greece.
The other part "Lake of Keri" has
taken this name from the lake that
used to be here in the old times and
its 4 km away from the compact village.
Nowadays, this lake is drained.
The port that exists in the "Lake"
hosts the small boats, which make
the round-trips, and is also considered
an ideal shelter for the boats of
the visitors.
From the beach of Keri, you may
rent a small boat at a very low cost
or ask from the "Kaikia" (small boats),
to take you to Marathonisi Island,
the beach of Marathia and the Blue
Caves.
The island of Marathonissi, opposite
the beach of Keri has rich vegetation;
sandy beaches with the friendly Caves
and crystal blue waters that'll make
you feel you are in Paradise. The
golden sandy beach has been chosen
from the sea turtles Caretta-Caretta
as a shelter and location for the
laying of their eggs.
The island belongs to the Gulf of
Laganas, which has been characterized
as National Marine Park. The beautiful
pebbled beach of Marathias with the
deep, blue crystal water is the ideal
choice for those wishing to relax
away from the crowded beaches. Wonderful
are the remarkable "Kamares" of Marathia.
These are arches that are formed by
the rocks above the sea and under
which the boats are sailing.
Far away from Marathias beach we
meet the Blue Caves, approaching only
by boat. This side of Keri is also
a favourite spot for Scuba Divers.
Not far away from the Caves there
are two tall white rocks that tower
out of the crystal blue waters, form
the Cape of Myzithres, which are a
great attraction to all visitors.
After this spot, waters & nature become
savage.
Keri is really a unique place, which
combines in a special way, the natural
beauty with the friendly hospitality,
the green mountains with the crystal
blue sea, the relaxation with the
complete entertainment. Your visit
in Keri will be an unforgettable experience.
They praise nature and love and still
nowadays are popular even to the youngest
ones. |
